Lumos partners with Mondo4Africa to Clean up Makoko
On September 21, 2019, as part of World Clean-Up Day, Lumos joined a group of volunteers led by Mondo4Africa, in an effort to clean up Makoko, a coastal community in Lagos State, visible from the third mainland bridge.
Makoko is located on the coast of mainland Lagos.
A third of the community is built on stilts along the lagoon and the rest is on the land; the stilts-community is densely populated and lacks basic amenities including proper sewage and drainage systems, talk less of stable power supply.
The clean-up initiative aimed to:
- Increase awareness within the community of the benefits of a cleaner environment
- Clean up the most impacted sections of the community, and in doing so, get members of the community to join the effort
- Leave behind enablers to facilitate periodic cleaning within the community (binbags, rakes, shovels, recycling bags, etc.).
The event supported by LAWMA, the Lagos State Waste Management Agency had in attendance over 45 volunteers, 30 of which were staff of Lumos Nigeria, drawn across functions. Expectedly, Lumos stole the show in our sea of yellow branded shirts!
The activity presented us with a good opportunity to give back to society while identifying other immediate needs of the community that may be addressed under our core CSR pillars: Solar Education and Advocacy, Provision of basic power to indigent schools and adoption of maternity wards in healthcare centers within indigent communities.
